Website marketing, SEO, Search Engine optimisations are terms often used to describe the various ways to get your website to the top of the search engine rankings.  This can be an expensive and time consuming project, and before starting you need to ask yourself, what do I want to achieve.  There are no answers here, just questions posed.

Why do I want a website?

This is the first question you should ask yourself.  Yes the answer might be straight forward and obvious, but put it into words.  Many people just assume that they need a website and don’t think about the reasons why.  Here are some ideas for reasons (not all are good and sensible reasons) to kick start your thoughts.

  • … to sell products on line?
  • … to advertise my business, so people can see what I do and how to find me?
  • … to provide information to people so they are able to make better choices?
  • … because everyone has a website?
  • … because I think a website makes my business look professional.
  • … to make money from my website by selling advertising?
  • … it’s a cost effective advertising brochure for my business?

What is my business marketing strategy?

Forget about the website for a minute, how are you marketing your business as a whole?

Are you advertising locally or nationally or not at all?

Are you planning events to publicise your business?

Or are you just intending to get your website to the top of the search engine rankings and hope for the best.

It is important to determine this so that you can direct your time, effort and budget accordingly.  If you are promoting your business in non internet areas, then you are not dependant on search engine rankings at the start.

How important is my ranking in search engine results?

You can only answer this once you have determined the previous question.

If you are an internet business with no non-internet promotion activity then the search engine rankings are most important and you need to allocate your time and financial budget appropriately.

On the other hand if you are a local business regularly advertising in the press then the search engine rankings are less important to you and they can be improved over a longer period.

It can take time to achieve good results in the search engine rankings.  A focussed effort can achieve this within 6 months.

While I did achieve first page results for a website within one month, this was for a rare set of keywords due it being a unique business in the area.  The downside of this was that same rarity meant that less people were looking for the product, and it had to be backed up by locally advertising.

Obviously how much can you afford to spend?

But also how much time do you have to invest?

Search Engine optimisation does cost money because it is a labour intensive activity if it is done well.  While there are companies and programs offering the automated scatter gun approach, this may not achieve as much as is expected and may even damage rankings in specific cases.

You can cut the costs of SEO by putting in the time yourself if you have it available.  It’s not difficult if you know where to target your activity.  (And I will be writing another article in the future on where to target this activity)

As I said at the beginning, this article is more about questions you should ask yourself.  Spend a little time planning out your campaign for your website, be clear about what you want to achieve and how.
